Ghana’s 4X100m team suffers disqualification in semis at Paris 2024

By Lukman MUMIN, Accra

The 4X100m relay team of Ghana were disqualified after a baton mishap during the semi-final three at the Olympic Games in Paris.

Despite finishing sixth with a time of 38.62s, the team’s effort was annulled after a mistake in the exchange of baton between Benjamin Azamati and Abdul Rasheed Saminu.

The team’s failure to reach the final of the 4X100m event also meant the end of the road for Ghana following a disastrous showing in the French capital.

Joseph Paul Amoah, who anchored the race, blamed the noise at the Stade de France for Ghana’s performance.

“The stadium was loud, obviously because of France. Instead of using it as an advantage, I think it broke us in a way. We struggled to hear the calls, but we did our best in the circumstances,” he told Joy Sports.

“We hope to do better next time. We weren’t nervous, it’s just the noise that prevented us from communicating effectively.

“Going into the race, we were all calm and ready to compete but unfortunately we got disqualified.” It was the second successive Olympic Games that Ghana has been disqualified over a baton mistake.
