Hearing of defamation case between actress Martha Ankomah and Actor Lil Win set for July 31

The defamation lawsuit filed by actress Martha Ankomah against Kumawood actor Kwadwo Nkansah, popularly known as Lil Win, is scheduled for a hearing on July 31. This follows the conclusion of the Case Management Conference on July 25, overseen by Justice Forson Agyapong Baah at the High Court in Accra.
Justice Agyapong Baah has instructed that Lil Win be notified of the upcoming hearing and provided with the court’s notes, as he was absent from the previous session and lacked legal representation.
Martha Ankomah’s lawsuit, filed on February 14, 2024, seeks redress for defamatory remarks made by Lil Win in a viral video. In the video, Lil Win is heard making disparaging comments about Ankomah’s significance in the film industry. Ankomah claims these statements have damaged her reputation and that of the brand GTP, for which she serves as an ambassador.
Ankomah asserts that Lil Win falsely accused her of looking down on Kumawood actors and refusing to collaborate with them due to perceived poor-quality storylines. She is seeking multiple forms of relief, including GH₵5 million in damages for defamation, compensatory damages for harm to her reputation, aggravated damages for the malicious nature of the statements, an apology, a retraction of the defamatory words, and an injunction preventing Lil Win from making further defamatory statements.
The lawsuit stems from an incident during a radio interview on Accra FM, where Ankomah expressed disinterest in collaborating with Kumawood actors, citing an aversion to witchcraft storylines. Lil Win responded angrily, leading to the statements Ankomah claims are defamatory.
In her statement of claim, Ankomah emphasizes her long and respected career in the film industry, her ambassadorial roles, and the impact of Lil Win’s statements on her reputation. She denies ever making disparaging remarks about Kumawood or its storylines.
The statement of claim also highlights the specific defamatory remarks made by Lil Win, including questioning Ankomah’s significance and suggesting that her success is due to support from men rather than her talent. Ankomah refutes these claims, emphasizing her hard work and dedication to her career.
Ankomah is a distinguished actress with over 20 years of experience in the film industry, featuring in numerous productions in both Ghana and Nigeria. She has gained respectability among industry peers, movie lovers, friends, and well-wishers. She has served as a brand ambassador for GTP and currently holds ambassadorial deals with Yaba Ghana, Vibrant Skin Care, and Style In Vogue.
Lil Win, known for his roles as an actor, musician, and comedian, is also the founder and director of Great Minds School. The defamation case centers on a video posted by Lil Win on social media on February 8, 2024, where he allegedly insulted and defamed Ankomah for turning down offers to feature in Kumawood films.
The hearing on July 31 will address these allegations and determine the merits of Ankomah’s claims.
