Fuel stations could become Electric Vehicle battery swap centres — Jinapor

The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has projected that conventional fuel stations could soon evolve into battery swap hubs for electric vehicles.

Speaking at the Future of Energy Conference, he explained that rapid innovation is making EV batteries smaller and more efficient, creating opportunities for a model where drivers can quickly replace depleted batteries within minutes rather than waiting to recharge.

Mr Jinapor expressed confidence that, with innovation, existing petrol and diesel stations could be repurposed into EV battery swap centres to support the country’s transition to clean energy.

Executive Director of the Africa Centre for Energy Policy, Ben Boakye, also urged private investors in filling stations to begin reengineering their facilities to incorporate renewable energy and EV infrastructure.

He stressed that adapting early to future mobility demand would prevent fuel retailers from being left behind as electric vehicles become more widespread.
