NPP Executive Council to decide on running mate for December elections

The National Executive Council (NEC) of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will convene today, July 4, to deliberate on the choice of running mate for their flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, ahead of the December 7 general elections.

Dr. Bawumia is set to propose Energy Minister Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh as his vice-presidential candidate, justifying why he considers him the most suitable for the role.

This decision-making process adheres to the party’s constitution, which requires the NEC, the party’s second highest decision-making body, to either approve or reject the nomination. Recently, Dr. Bawumia submitted Dr. Prempeh’s name to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for his approval as the running mate for the 2024 elections.

With the general elections only six months away, this development has garnered significant attention.

A report  recent by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) indicates that Dr. Prempeh, also known as NAPO, is the favored choice among NPP members for the vice-presidential position. The report highlights a strong consensus within the party, especially emphasizing the strategic importance of choosing a candidate from the Ashanti region, a key stronghold of the party.

According to the NIB survey, Dr. Prempeh received an impressive 76.2% support from party executives, particularly from constituency and polling station executives who made up the majority of the survey sample. His closest rival, Yaw Osei Adutwum, the Minister of Education and MP for the Bosomtwe constituency, garnered 10.1% of the responses, making him the second most preferred candidate.

As the NPP gears up for the 2024 elections, the proposed pairing of Dr. Bawumia and Dr. Prempeh is expected to significantly influence the party’s strategy and campaign efforts.
