GOC to Celebrate International Olympic Day with School Children at Nima
The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) has selected the Nima Cluster of Schools as the venue for this year’s International Olympic Day celebrations, set for Wednesday, June 26th, 2024. The event, themed “Let’s Move and Celebrate,” aims to ignite a collective passion for the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympic Games by encouraging people to stay active and connected through sports.
Mr. Ben Nunoo Mensah, President of the GOC, emphasized that this year’s celebration will be uniquely styled in collaboration with the French Embassy in Ghana and the World Health Organization (WHO). He highlighted the importance of health, particularly for children, and urged everyone to be conscious of their health and adopt healthy lifestyles.
“Regular exercise, socializing, and a balanced diet are crucial for maintaining good health,” said Mr. Mensah. He also encouraged children and youth to take an interest in sports and to learn about Olympism, the Olympic Games, sportsmanship, and volunteerism, as well as the activities of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), GOC, and other sports organizations.
Mr. Mensah called on the media to promote activities that would engage the youth in various sports.
“It’s not only football; they can also participate in basketball, handball, tennis, swimming, athletics, table tennis, baseball, badminton, cycling, boxing, e-sports, golf, hockey, fencing, kickboxing, rugby, weightlifting, judo, volleyball, wrestling, and more,” he noted.
He paid tribute to the nation’s sportsmen and women who sacrifice and strive for success on the global stage.
He also commended Paris 2024 for being the first Olympic Games to achieve full gender parity, in line with the reforms of the Olympic Agenda.
The Olympic Day, established in 1948, is a global celebration of sport, marked on June 23 each year to commemorate the founding of the IOC in 1894 by Frenchman Pierre de Coubertin. This year’s Olympic Day is particularly special as it coincides with the upcoming Games in Coubertin’s birthplace, highlighting the power of sports to unite and entertain the world.
As Ghana prepares to celebrate this important day, the GOC’s initiatives aim to inspire a new generation of athletes and promote the values of the Olympic movement across the country.
