AMA uncovers syndicate behind fake marriage certificates

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has discovered an alleged syndicate responsible for producing and issuing counterfeit marriage certificates to the public.

The fraudulent operation was discovered after a client’s marriage certificate, allegedly obtained through the syndicate, was rejected by a foreign embassy during a visa application due to inconsistencies. The matter was subsequently reported to the AMA, prompting internal checks.

Confirming the development, Gilbert Nii Ankrah, the Head of Public Affairs at the AMA, stated that the Assembly has launched an investigation and referred the case to the Ghana Police Service for further action.

Preliminary findings indicate that the individuals involved were forging marriage certificates while falsely posing as AMA officials responsible for conducting and facilitating marriage registrations.

“The Assembly has detected these fraudulent activities and immediately handed the matter over to the Police for a full-scale investigation,” Mr. Ankrah stated.

Mr. Ankrah warned the public to only engage directly with the AMA’s official Marriage Registry and to avoid using intermediaries or unofficial agents when seeking marriage registration services.
