Accra Marriott Hotel launches Green Team Recyclable Initiative in Collaboration with ZenZero Association and Guinness Ghana

By Christabel Oboshie ANNAN, Accra

In a concerted effort to reduce environmental pollution and combat climate change, the Accra Marriott Hotel, in collaboration with the ZenZero Association and Guinness Ghana, has launched the Green Team Recyclable Initiative in Accra.

This initiative aims to fight plastic pollution and promote environmental sustainability practices.

General Manager of the Accra Marriott Hotel, Luciano Scelza, expressed the hotel’s commitment to creating a positive and sustainable impact.

He said the hotel aims to reduce its environmental footprint through sustainable construction, responsible sourcing, and ecosystem protection.

He highlighted the hotel’s goal to eliminate single-use plastics and achieve 100% property certification to a recognized sustainability standard by 2025, with 30% already certified in 2021.

He emphasized that the partnership with ZenZero Association ensures the efficient collection, processing, and repurposing of recyclable plastics.

This collaboration aims to manage waste more effectively and raise recycling awareness among hotel guests and the local community.

“Each tree we plant, each piece of plastic we recycle, and each green initiative contributes to a more sustainable future,” he added.

He further noted that the partnership marks the first phase of a weekly plastic evacuation program, where plastics are recycled into products such as waste bins and broomsticks.

This initiative aims to reduce the haphazard disposal of plastic waste, which often ends up in landfill sites, causing pollution and environmental degradation.

Vice President of ZenZero Association, Stefano Sala, remarked on the importance of recycling and the development of accessible circular economy systems at all levels—governmental, corporate, and communal.

He praised the Accra Marriott Hotel for being the first 5-star hotel in Accra to implement a comprehensive plastic collection and recycling system through its partnership with ZenZero Association.

In his address marking World Environment Day, he called on governments, entrepreneurs, municipal leaders, religious leaders, and school headmasters to join in making a tangible impact on the environment.

He highlighted ZenZero’s achievements in 2023, including the collection and recycling of 430 tons of plastic, equivalent to 1.3 million bottles.

He stressed that amplifying the impact of reducing environmental pollution requires mobilizing a broad network of committed individuals and organizations.

Sustainability and Responsibility Manager at Guinness Ghana, Lynessa Darko, noted that the collaboration signifies an important step towards sustainability, a core focus of Guinness Ghana.

The event concluded with a tree-planting exercise, symbolizing a step towards a greener, more sustainable future.
