Application for Special Voting Opens June 17 – EC

The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that special voting for the 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections will take place on Monday, December 2, 2024, across the country.

This special voting exercise will be held at designated polling locations within the 276 constituencies.

Registration for applicants wishing to participate in the special voting will be open from June 17 to July 1, 2024.

EC Chairperson Madam Jean Adukwei Mensa disclosed this information during a meeting with the Ghana Journalists Association and representatives of the security services in Accra.

The special voting exercise is designed for officials who will be engaged in election-related duties on the main polling day, making it impossible for them to vote.

Eligible participants include personnel from the Ghana Armed Forces, National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), National Security, Ghana Immigration Service, Ghana National Fire Service, and Information Services Department.

Others eligible are members of the Ghana Police Service, Prisons Service, National Ambulance Service, Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority, Ghana Journalists Association, and National Media Commission.

Mrs. Mensa stated that organizations and individuals wishing to participate in the special voting should apply to the Commission through its Constituency Returning Officers.

“An applicant must be a registered voter in the constituency where they wish to vote and must apply in person to the Constituency Returning Officer,” she said.

Additionally, applicants are required to provide their names, voter ID cards, and polling station codes to enable the EC Officer to verify their voter status in the constituency.

Mrs. Mensa explained that this exercise would allow the Commission to temporarily remove the names of special voting applicants from the register for the December 7 election. However, she clarified that the results of the special voting would only be declared after the December 7 election.
