Ghana to Advocate for AU Support in Intercontinental Reparations Initiative – President

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has announced Ghana’s intention to rally the African Union (AU) behind a transcontinental initiative aimed at strengthening the call for reparations related to the transatlantic slave trade.

Emphasizing the necessity of forging unity and collective action, President Akufo-Addo stressed the urgency of creating a powerful and undeniable voice to address the reparations issue effectively.

During discussions with Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley of Trinidad and Tobago at the Jubilee House in Accra, President Akufo-Addo emphasized the importance of collaboration between the Caribbean and African nations in this common cause.

He underscored the need for a strategic approach that compels acknowledgment and engagement from the perpetrators of historical injustices.

Dr. Rowley’s visit to Ghana, part of his itinerary celebrating the 25th anniversary of Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s reign, included discussions on the establishment of an international entity, such as an AU-Caribbean body, dedicated to advancing reparations for African descendants affected by the slave trade.

Historical estimates from organizations like the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) indicate that nearly 13 million Africans were forcibly trafficked across the Atlantic between 1501 and 1867, resulting in approximately two million deaths during the harrowing Middle Passage.

President Akufo-Addo acknowledged the enduring legacy of inequality, injustice, and economic disparities faced by African communities as a consequence of this dark chapter in history.

He expressed support for the notion of an international mechanism to expedite reparations processes, affirming Ghana’s commitment to collaborate on such initiatives.

President Akufo-Addo has been vocal in urging the AU to address the reparations issue earnestly, drawing parallels with compensation efforts for other historical atrocities.

Highlighting the direct impact on African communities, he reiterated the importance of redressing the injustices of the past for the collective self-worth and dignity of affected populations.

As discussions progress, Ghana stands poised to play a leading role in advocating for intercontinental solidarity and tangible measures towards reparatory justice.
