We’ll prosecute corrupt officials – Prof Opoku-Agyemang

Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the running mate for the NDC’s flagbearer John Dramani Mahama in the upcoming 2024 general elections, has vowed to hold accountable any official involved in the misappropriation of state resources during the Akufo-Addo administration.

She emphasized the importance of holding persons found culpable accountable.

She stated, “John and I have agreed, that whoever has participated in the plunder of the state must be held accountable.

“This is not a threat; it is a promise, premised on the wishes of our citizens across the various political and social divides, and hinged on the principle of accountability.”

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang highlighted the crucial role that the 2024 election will play in revitalizing Ghana’s future, emphasizing that it represents more than a mere quest for power.

She stressed that it is a critical juncture for national healing and renewal, urging the Electoral Commission (EC) to uphold transparency and refrain from suppressing the truth in the lead-up to the December elections.

Expressing concerns about the EC’s credibility, particularly regarding missing equipment in its custody, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang called for transparency from the commission.

She stated, “So, the electoral commission is struggling to defend its credibility and until the commission tells us that the equipment means nothing, everyone should believe that there are no issues to worry about.”

The former Education Minister stressed that without clarity and reassurance from the commission, doubts will persist among the public, eroding trust in the electoral process.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang assured former President Mahama that she would not shirk responsibility in their administration, stating, “I will share in our collective successes and share responsibility for our setbacks if any.”

In response, former President Mahama emphasized the need for leadership prioritizing integrity, truth, and accountability.

He stated that Ghana requires a government willing to take action and accept responsibility for the country’s current situation, highlighting the critical role the next four years will play in determining Ghana’s future success.

The NDC’s presentation underscores the party’s commitment to accountability, transparency, and national healing, setting the stage for a dynamic and decisive electoral contest in 2024.
