Under my leadership-Dr Bawumia declares
Vice-President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, says he does not support or condone same-sex relationships in any form.
He reiterated his unwavering stance against LGBTQI+ activities, affirming that such practices would not find sanctuary under his leadership.
Addressing hundreds of Muslims during the Eid prayers at the Kumasi Central Mosque, he said his belief is consistent with the stance of his religion, Islam, as well as other religions such as Christianity, and the social and cultural norms of Ghana.
He said his faith and religion abhor the practice of same-sex relationships, and he would not support homosexuality in Ghana in any way.
He highlighted the alignment between the Islamic faith and other major religions in the country regarding the rejection of LGBTQI+ practices.
Quoting Quranic verses, notably Suratul Al-A’raf, Dr. Bawumia underscored the religious prohibition of LGBTQI+ acts, emphasizing the sacredness of traditional values and norms.
“I would like to take this opportunity to personally comment on the raging issue of LGBTQI+ in Ghana.
“First of all, it is important to note that our cultural and social norms and values as Ghanaians frown on the practice of homosexuality.
“Furthermore, as a Muslim, my view on this matter aligns with the position of my religious faith,” he stated.
Dr. Bawumia, who is also the Flag-bearer of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), said the Holy Quran is replete with verses frowning on LGBTQI+ acts, including same-sex marriages.
“My faith is therefore very strictly against the practice of homosexuality, no “ifs” or “buts,” no shades of grey,” he pointed out.
“I personally, therefore, cannot support that which my religion and indeed all the major religions in Ghana clearly and unequivocally forbid.
“All the major religious traditions in Ghana are opposed to this practice and I stand opposed to now, and I will stand opposed to it as President, Insha Allah,” he emphasized.
Dr. Bawumia’s remarks were prompted by mounting calls from various quarters, particularly within certain Muslim communities in the country, urging him to articulate his stance on the issue of LGBTQI+ rights.
The occasion served as a platform for Dr. Bawumia to underscore his commitment to the principles of his faith and the societal values of Ghana.
Dr. Bawumia’s stance resonates deeply with the cultural and religious fabric of Ghana.
With Ghana at a pivotal juncture in its socio-political landscape regarding LGBTQI+ rights, Dr. Bawumia’s declaration signals a steadfast commitment to upholding the prevailing cultural and religious mores.
His unwavering declaration, stating that such practices would not be tolerated under his leadership, unmistakably communicates the trajectory his government would pursue upon assuming office in January 2025.
The discourse around LGBTQI+ rights in Ghana has been contentious, with divergent perspectives clashing over cultural, religious, and legal grounds.
Ghana’s parliament has passed the anti-LGBTQ+ Bill and it is now awaiting presidential assent.
President Akufo-Addo had already indicated his inability to assent to the Bill for it to become law, since the constitutionality of the Bill is being challenged in the Supreme Court by some human rights groups and activists.
