Spectacular opening ceremony

-Colorful display of rich cultural heritage

Ghana made history with a colorful and spectacular display of her rich cultural heritage at the opening ceremony of the 13th African Games at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium.

Fireworks, exhibitions of different kinds of African costumes, dance, among others, took center stage at the newly built stadium, paying homage to the continent’s rich diversity in a ceremony that lasted for almost an hour.

From the well-crafted choreography that transitioned traditional dances to contemporary performances, the host showcased her diversity and dexterity throughout in every dance, movement, song, and motion to tell the African story.

Accra put her best foot forward, drawing in musicians like celebrated reggae-dancehall lord, Shatta Wale, and King Promise to enchant patrons with every beat, hum, move, and rhythm.

The launch of the 13th African Games was punctuated by the usual parade of athletes representing 53 countries taking part in the high mass of the continental sport.

Cape Verde, out of the 49 participating nations, was the only country that was absent from the athletes’ march.

The occasion generated over 2.2 billion viewership across the globe as dances and choreographies were erected in the stadium specifically for the show.

With the world tuned-in, Ghana seized the moment to put on display her unbridled pride in her roots while still making room for her commitment to showcasing African unity and solidarity.

The occasion, which was a celebration in every sense of the word, obviously a deliberate effort to stage what is supposed to be an unforgettable night highlighted the spirit of excellence, camaraderie, and sportsmanship at its very best.

Filled with shades, light, captivating visuals, and rhythm, the occasion carried patrons along beautifully on a journey through rich Ghanaian culture, and Accra 2023 set the tone for what the host desires to deliver in the three-week festival.

Renowned dancehall artiste Shatta Wale, Pat Thomas, Ebo Taylor, South Africa’s Kamo Mphela, and King Promise also thrilled fans with some breathtaking performances.

Amidst the enjoyable atmosphere, participating countries filed out, taking turns to receive cheers as applause rang out to welcome guests for the Games.

Showcasing their respective cultures through clothing, the various teams joined in the fun as they took the opportunity to also display diversity as they made their way through the tracks on the magnificent Legon Stadium, home for the track and field events.

With almost 6,000 athletes across the continent participating, the Games will run until March 23, 2024, with 29 different sporting disciplines across two cities – Accra and Cape Coast.

Addressing the opening ceremony, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo urged Ghanaians to take advantage of the 13th African Games for generations to benefit.

He said Africa was blessed with rich diversity, hence the need to cherish the unique contributions of participating countries who possessed different cultures, traditions, and identities.

He said it was heartwarming to witness the role sports play in bringing the continent together.

“As you compete in the games in the coming days, remember that your efforts inspire countless individuals across the continent.

“Strive for excellence, push your limits, and showcase the immense talents that Africa possesses,” he said.

President Akufo-Addo urged participating countries to compete with integrity and sportsmanship, to honor the values of fair play and mutual respect in the competition.

He called on key players in the sports ecosystem to rally behind Ghana in making the games a memorable one.

He welcomed all participating countries in his inaugural speech, wishing them good luck.

Mr. Mousse Fati Mahamat, Chairperson, African Union Commission, commended the Government of Ghana for the massive investments in sporting facilities and infrastructure to host the games.

“Sports have the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire, it has the power to unite people in a way that little else does, it speaks to youth in a language they understand,” he said.

The gallant sports personality urged athletes and officials to be ambassadors of fair play, equity, discipline, inclusion, tolerance, and teamwork in order to host a successful event.

Ghana, in 2018, won the bid to host the games for the first time in its history.

The African Games features Armwrestling, basketball, boxing, chess, football, volleyball, handball, athletics, table tennis, tennis, badminton, among others.
