President Akufo-Addo delivers last and final SONA today

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is scheduled to deliver his last State of the Nation Address (SONA) to Parliament in Accra today, his tenure in office ends after the December 7 Presidential and Parliamentary elections
The SONA, as mandated by Article 67 of the 1992 Constitution, requires the President to address the nation through Parliament at the beginning of every session.
This address provides an opportunity for the President to report on the state of the nation and outline the government’s agenda for the coming year.
The SONA is a constitutional obligation and yearly tradition, providing an opportunity for the President to engage with Parliament and the nation, reflecting on accomplishments, challenges, and future priorities.
It is expected to be attended by Ministers of State, former presidents, members of the Diplomatic Corp, chiefs, queens, and other dignitaries.
Expected to touch on various aspects of the nation’s affairs, President Akufo-Addo’s final SONA is anticipated to cover key areas such as security, governance, the fight against corruption, education, health, infrastructure, and the economy.
Given the unprecedented challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war, their impact on the economy is also expected to feature prominently.
Furthermore, the President is likely to highlight achievements and updates on initiatives such as economic recovery efforts, the implementation of Agenda 111, advancements in the health sector, the performance of Free SHS candidates in the West African Secondary Schools Certificate Examinations (WASSCE), and progress in road construction projects, among others.
Security measures have been put in place by Parliament for the event, including the display of Parliamentary identification cards by MPs to facilitate access and enhanced security protocols around the Speaker’s Lobby and surrounding areas.
Following the President’s address, a motion on the debate on the SONA will be moved on Thursday, February 29.
The Business Committee has recommended time allotments for various speakers, with the debate expected to conclude on Thursday, March 7, 2024.
