Amputee Football Team calls for support ahead of AAFCON 2024 in Egypt

The technical officers of the Ghana National Amputee Football Team, known as the Black Challenge, have convened have called for assistance in securing funds to prepare and compete at the upcoming Africa Amputee Football Cup of Nations (AAFCON).

At a press conference yesterday, they made a heartfelt appeal to the government, Ministry of Youth & Sports, and the general public.

The tournament is scheduled to take place from April 19 to 28, 2024, in Egypt.

During the conference, notable figures such as award-winning coach Stephen Richard Obeng, technical director Ali Jaraa, Physio Dr. Kerdi of 37 Hospital, and goalkeepers’ trainer Eric Lartey were present.

Secretary-general Mohammed Huzair led the conference, highlighting the urgent need for support.

Mr. Huzair emphasized the neglect faced by Amputee Football despite the joy it brought to Ghanaians during the first-ever African Para Games hosted in Accra last year.

He expressed disappointment that promises made after their victory at the Para Games had not been fulfilled, leaving the players struggling for basic necessities.

Acknowledging the positive leadership of Mr. Samson Deen, president of the Africa and Ghana Paralympic Committees, and CEO of African Origin, Mr. Huzair called for renewed attention to the plight of the players.

He recounted the challenges faced by the team, including self-financing their travel for championships and the lack of support from various quarters.

Coach Obeng highlighted the significance of the upcoming Egypt competition, which serves as a qualifier for the 2026 World Cup. He stressed the need for financial assistance to cover essential expenses such as camping, air tickets, transportation, feeding, logistics, participation fees, and friendly matches.

Ali Jaraa, a former national goalie, commended sports journalists for their support of lesser-known sports.

Goalkeeper’s trainer Lartey lamented the collapse of the Amputee League in 2018 due to financial constraints but highlighted the success of producing players who now play professionally in Turkey.

Welfare Officer Emmanuel Akpabli appealed for equitable treatment, suggesting the allocation of the remaining Black Stars’ winning bonuses from the failed AFCON 2023 to the Amputee team.

President of Ghana Amputee Football, Mr. Forster Kwarteng, assured the nation of the team’s determination to defend their title in Egypt.

Meanwhile, Karivan Travel and Tours Company are working to secure sponsorship for the Black Challenge, with packages announced for individuals and corporate bodies interested in traveling to support the team during the tournament.

In light of these appeals, it is imperative for stakeholders to rally behind the Ghana Amputee Football Team, providing the necessary support to ensure their successful participation and representation at the Africa Amputee Football Cup of Nations.
