GAF partners private company to produce drones
Ghana Navy, National Signals Bureau, and Soko Aerial Robotics School to Collaborate on unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) Production.
In a significant step towards enhancing Ghana’s maritime security capabilities, the Ghana Navy, Ghana’s National Signals Bureau (NSB), and Soko Aerial Robotics School have agreed to collaborate on the local production of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for naval use.
The agreement was formalized during a meeting between Rear Admiral Issah Adam Yakubu, the Chief of the Naval Staff of the Ghana Armed Forces, and Mr. Kwabena Adu-Boahene, the Director General of the NSB, at the Ghana Naval Headquarters in Burma Camp, Accra, on February 8, 2024.
The collaboration stems from the NSB’s recent provision of communication equipment to the Navy, following a comprehensive survey of Navy units, bases, detachments, and ships nationwide.
Impressed by the NSB’s professionalism and dedication, Rear Admiral Yakubu expressed appreciation for the swift installation of the equipment, which has bolstered the Navy’s operational capabilities.
During the meeting, the NSB team, led by Mr. Adu-Boahene and his Operations Director, Mr. Benjamin Ansah, was briefed on activities at the national Maritime Operations Centre (MOC) at the Naval Headquarters.
The NSB team, intrigued by the Navy’s operations, expressed interest in further collaboration to enhance maritime surveillance.
Recognizing the capabilities of Soko Aerial Robotics in UAV technology, the NSB proposed a meeting with Soko Aerial Robotics to explore opportunities for collaboration.
Following a tripartite meeting involving the CNS, Mr. Adu-Boahene, and Soko Aerial Robotics, it was decided to embark on the local production of UAVs to bolster the Navy’s surveillance capabilities.
Mr. Adu-Boahene commended the Navy for its professionalism and commitment to national security.
He emphasized the importance of local production to reduce reliance on foreign technology and equipment, highlighting the need for institutions to demonstrate urgency and commitment in their endeavors.
In a separate meeting, the CNS engaged with a delegation from the NSB to discuss cybersecurity challenges faced by the Navy in safeguarding systems and data.
The discussions underscored the importance of collaboration between security agencies to address emerging threats in the cyber landscape.
The collaborative efforts between the Ghana Navy, NSB, and Soko Aerial Robotics mark a significant milestone in strengthening Ghana’s maritime security infrastructure.
By harnessing local expertise and capabilities, the initiative aims to enhance the Navy’s operational effectiveness and contribute to safeguarding Ghana’s maritime domain.
