Accra Mayor inaugurates Child Daycare Center for children of waste sector migrants
Accra’s Mayor, Elizabeth Kwatsoe Sackey, has officially commissioned a state-of-the-art child daycare center in the bustling Old Fadama township. This modern facility, funded by the Robert Bosch Foundation under the auspices of the Mayor’s Migration Council’s Global Cities Fund, is designed to provide a safe and nurturing environment for the children of migrants working in the informal waste sector.
Situated in the heart of Old Fadama, the single-storey daycare center, constructed by City Plus Limited, features contemporary amenities such as age-appropriate classrooms, a play area, designated spaces for meals and rest, and an administrative office.
Mayor Sackey, during the inauguration, expressed her dedication to addressing the needs of vulnerable populations in the city, particularly migrants in the waste sector. She emphasized that every child deserves a supportive environment for growth and learning.
This initiative aligns with the city’s broader social inclusion program, aiming to uplift communities that often find themselves on the fringes of society.
Fatao Dialo Ndiaye, Chief of Mission at the International Organization for Migration (IOM), commended Mayor Sackey’s commitment to migrant and community rights.
Ndiaye highlighted Accra’s unique position in Africa, praising the city’s engagement and the Mayor’s efforts to lead the integration of migrants. She stressed the importance of considering migrants as integral parts of society and encouraged Africans to embrace and integrate migrants.
The Chief of Mission appealed to the community to maintain the facility and support the Mayor’s vision, emphasizing the need for a lasting positive impact.
French Ambassador to Ghana, Jules Armand Aniambossou, expressed gratitude to the Mayor and assured France’s support for ongoing collaboration.
The event was attended by key figures, including the Presiding Member of the AMA, Alfred Adjei, the Coordinating Director of the AMA, Douglas N.K Annoful, representatives from Amnesty International Ghana and the Ghana Immigration Service, as well as notable personalities such as Okyeame Kwame, the 2009 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards ‘Artist of the Year.’
Chiefs and staff of the Assembly were also present at the commissioning ceremony.
