GRA garnishee NSA bank account over GH₵15m tax liability

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has successfully obtained a garnishee order to recover more than GH₵15 million in taxes from the National Sports Authority (NSA).

The NSA has reportedly not paid withholding taxes since 2019, prompting the GRA to pursue legal action to reclaim the outstanding funds.

In a letter dated November 14, 2023, addressed to the Bank of Ghana, the GRA confirmed the garnishee order for the recovery of tax liabilities from the government sports agency.

The Bank of Ghana, in turn, notified the NSA and the Ministry of Youth and Sports on November 17, 2023.

The letter from the GRA, referring to the Revenue Administration Act of 2016 (Act 915), directed the Bank of Ghana to withhold funds due to the taxpayer (National Sports Authority) amounting to GH₵15,520,645.78. The Bank of Ghana has consequently withheld the entire working balance of GHC 109,791.21 from the NSA’s FSPI project 2023 account, pending final approval for payment to the GRA.

The legal measure underscores the GRA’s commitment to ensuring tax compliance and collecting revenue owed to the government.

The NSA is expected to address the outstanding tax liabilities to resolve the matter and release the withheld funds.
