Gerald Asamoah calls for coaching stability in Black Stars

Former German international footballer, Gerald Asamoah, has expressed concern over the lack of progress in Ghana’s national football team, citing the high turnover of coaches as a significant factor.
Asamoah, who made history as the first black player to represent unified Germany in 2001, emphasized the importance of stability and continuity for a national team’s success.
In an interview with Joy Sports, Asamoah highlighted the constant changes in management as a hindrance to the team’s progress.
He stressed the need for continuity and a long-term commitment to a coach, pointing out that success for a national team requires a stable coaching setup.
“What we need is continuity. We need a coach who will be there for long enough to say, ‘We have a project for five years, and this is the coach we are going with,’” Asamoah stated.
He pointed out the rapid succession of coaches in recent years, including Otto Addo and Chris Hughton, emphasizing the importance of identifying a coach for a long-term project.
“Asamoah suggests identifying a coach and committing to them for a long-term project. “[We need to identify] a coach and say ‘we have a project with you. In five years, we want to be there.’ So then, you need to believe the coach and work with the coach. This is what I can say to the members [of the GFA]. It will be a good idea to keep the coach for long,” he added.
Asamoah’s comments come at a time when there is pressure on the current coach, Chris Hughton, following disappointing results, including a recent 1-0 loss to Comoros in a 2026 World Cup qualifier.
Hughton, appointed in February, is the fourth manager since 2020, following Otto Addo, Charles Akonnor, and Milovan Rajevac, all of whom faced dismissal due to poor performance.
The Black Stars is gearing up for the AFCON in Ivory Coast next January with the aspiration of ending a trophy drought that spans over 40 years.
Asamoah’s call for coaching stability reflects a broader sentiment among football enthusiasts who believe that a consistent coaching setup is crucial for success on the international stage.
