President lauds GAF’s dedication to democratic governance

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has commended the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) for their unwavering commitment to upholding democracy in the country and their significant contributions to global peacekeeping efforts.
The President made these remarks during the 2023 Graduation Parade of the Ghana Military Academy in Accra.
Addressing the graduating officer cadets, President Akufo-Addo praised the professionalism and dedication demonstrated by the military in supporting constitutional rule.
He emphasized the importance of the armed forces remaining focused on their core duties amid the growing incidence of military interventions in sub-Saharan African countries.
The President acknowledged the sacrifices and efforts of the GAF in maintaining peace and security domestically and internationally.
Ghana, since 1960, has been dedicated to the cause of peace under the banners of the United Nations (UN), African Union (AU), and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
President Akufo-Addo highlighted Ghana’s global peacekeeping role, noting that the country is currently involved in 15 peacekeeping missions with a deployed strength of 2,500 military personnel.
He commended the GAF for exceeding the United Nations’ target in the deployment of female military personnel, with 19% females deployed, surpassing the UN’s goal of 9%.
The President urged the graduating cadets to be disciplined and committed to protecting the territorial integrity of the country.
He emphasized that the large number of officers being commissioned is a strategic move to prepare for emerging security threats facing the nation.
In light of the security situation in West Africa, particularly in the Sahel region, President Akufo-Addo stated that measures would be instituted to enhance the entire security architecture of the country.
He highlighted the proportional spread of the Armed Forces across the nation to ensure continuous surveillance and the ability to safeguard Ghana’s territorial integrity.
Furthermore, Ghana is set to host a joint Peacekeeping Ministerial meeting with the UN in December, focusing on civilian protection, combating misinformation, promoting safety and security, addressing mental health concerns, and recognizing the pivotal role of women in UN peacekeeping efforts.
This gathering, the first in Africa and the fifth ministerial summit overall, aims to strengthen UN peacekeeping in alignment with Action for Peacekeeping and A4P+.
