ECG’s monthly revenue jumps from GH₵480m to GH₵1.1bn- Dr Prempeh

By Christabel Oboshie ANNAN, Accra

In a groundbreaking achievement, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has reported a substantial increase in monthly revenue, surging from GH₵480 million to GH₵1.1 billion—an impressive 130% boost.

This remarkable success follows the implementation of a nationwide ECG revenue mobilization initiative aimed at enhancing the financial stability of the power sector.

Minister of Energy, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, shared this significant revelation during a media briefing focused on the progress of the Ministry under the theme “Keeping the Lights On, Keeping the Nation Moving.”

Digitalization efforts pay off

Dr Prempeh highlighted the success of the ECG PowerApp Enhancement Project, a pivotal component of the company’s digitalization efforts.

The number of app users skyrocketed from 250,000 in May 2022 to an impressive 3,045,000 as of October 2023.

Monthly app usage now stands at 94%, generating an average of GH₵745 million in monthly revenue.

CAIMS Project

The ongoing validation of downstream assets through the CAIMS Project is set to revolutionize ECG’s billing system.

Two million consumers, previously unaccounted for, are expected to be formally incorporated, with 11 districts having already completed the project and identified an estimated 10,000 new customers in each district.

Operation zero project & flat rate billing initiative

To enhance revenue collection and eliminate unlawful practices, Dr Opoku  highlighted staff-driven revenue mobilization initiatives.

He disclosed that since June 2023, 90,302 new customers have been identified and registered, resulting in GH₵84.8 million in billed charges, with GH₵25 million collected as of the end of October 2023.

Loss reduction efforts

Dr Prempeh emphasized the ongoing installation of 800,000 Meter Management System-compliant smart prepayment meters to address shortages and enhance energy accounting.

With the National Electricity Access estimated at 88.85%, these measures aim to reduce technical, commercial, and collection losses in the power distribution system.

Strides towards reliable power supply

Dr Prempeh reaffirmed the government’s commitment to diminishing power outages by curbing technical and commercial losses.

Boundary demarcations for nine operational regions and nine districts have been completed, signifying a significant step towards the reduction of such losses.

He announced that a comprehensive survey of approximately 16,000 distribution transformers conducted by ECG has paved the way for the introduction of metering systems, contributing to enhance energy accounting and reduced distribution system losses.

Addressing distribution challenges

Dr Prempeh pinpointed the high levels of losses in technical, commercial, and collection areas as pivotal issues affecting the country’s power distribution framework.
Initiatives such as the implementation of VIT smart technology and SCADA systems are underway to expedite the restoration of distribution feeders, enhance the overall customer experience, and mitigate disruptions within the country.

The achievements outlined by Dr Prempeh underscore the concerted efforts to strengthen Ghana’s power sector, ensuring a more reliable and cost-effective electricity supply for consumers.
