Attackers of National Security officers arrested

The Ministry of National Security has issued a stern warning, declaring that it will not tolerate attacks on state security personnel operating in the country. This statement comes in response to a series of recent attacks on security officers in various regions, particularly in the Upper East and North East regions.

The most recent incident occurred on Tuesday, October 24, 2023, when an irate youth group, armed with weapons including AK-47 rifles and machetes, confronted a team of five counter-terrorism intelligence officers deployed to Garu in the Upper East Region.

Despite the officers’ efforts to identify themselves, the armed group fired multiple gunshots at their vehicle. Fearing for their safety, the officers sought refuge at the Garu Police Station.

The attackers pursued them to the police station, firing shots with the clear intent of causing harm.

It was the intervention of the Ghana Armed Forces that ensured the safe evacuation of the National Security personnel.

This disturbing trend of attacks on security officers is not confined to this recent incident.

Over the past several months, there have been reports of attacks on security personnel in the Upper East region, including the killing of a police constable in Gigande on January 23, 2023, the murder of an immigration officer in Bawku on April 3, 2023, and an attack on a police escort at Gbewa College of Education in Pusiga on September 21, 2023.

Earlier incidents include an attack on military personnel at Baribari-Buabula on March 16, 2022, an assault on an ambulance at Bazua in Binduri on May 13, 2022, and the burning of Defense intelligence vehicles at the Sabon Gari police checkpoint on December 7, 2021.

The Ministry of National Security has strongly condemned these attacks, emphasizing that such actions are entirely unacceptable.

The Ministry asserts that it is committed to promoting active citizen participation in the protection of peace and stability within Ghana.

Deliberate acts aimed at endangering the lives of State Security and Intelligence Agencies’ personnel will not be tolerated.

A source within the Ministry stated, “The Ministry is duty-bound to protect personnel of State Security and Intelligence Agencies, who have taken an oath to defend the people and territorial integrity of Ghana against all forms of threats.”

In response to the October 24 attack, the Ministry of National Security, in collaboration with the Ghana Armed Forces, conducted a joint operation in Garu, resulting in the arrest of several individuals involved in the attack.

The Ministry remains resolute in its commitment to combat criminal activities and ensure the safety of the nation’s citizens.
