Minister of Information holds talks with Guyanese counterpart

The Minister of information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, yesterday held talks with his Guyanese counterpart, Kwame McCoy, at the Ministry Conference Room.

The meeting was meant to explore opportunities for cooperation and improve relations between the two Information Ministries of the Commonwealth countries.

Oppong Nkrumah, in welcoming the Guyanese entourage, which included the Guyanese Minister of Housing and Water, Collins Croal, explained how the Right to Information Act is operationalized in Ghana. He also touched on the history of its passage.

He also hinted that the Ministry will soon return to Parliament to give the RTI Commission more teeth to bite with.

The Ministers also deliberated on the differences between how the Act operates in the two countries.

He expressed his excitement at the opportunity to share ideas on how the Ministries are being managed in both countries.

Oppong Nkrumah was also hopeful that greater interactions between the governments of the two countries will lead to closer ties and increased trade.

Minister McCoy stated that Guyana operates a free media landscape, much like Ghana, a situation he is very much in favour of.

This was corroborated by Oppong Nkrumah who took time to explain the legal framework in which the Ghanaian media operates, a situation he said has created “a strong, boisterous, democratic environment.”
