Mission 300 portal shows progress towards 300m Africans gaining electricity
The Mission 300 initiative, led by the World Bank and the African Development Bank, has launched an interactive online portal to monitor progress towards its goal of giving 300 million people access to electricity by 2030.
The new Mission 300 Progress Portal shows results and projections for projects financed by the World Bank and its partners. Data will be updated quarterly to reflect progress on approved and upcoming operations.
The tool tracks three categories of beneficiaries: people already connected to the grid, those set to be connected through approved projects, and those targeted by projects still being prepared through 2030.
As of the latest update, 32 million people have gained access to electricity since July 2023, the official start of Mission 300’s results count. This progress covers 84 projects in 39 countries. The pace of new connections is one and a half times faster than in previous years, showing a clear acceleration in project rollout.
The World Bank currently has $8.5 billion in active commitments under Mission 300, along with $1.2 billion in co-financing from governments, financial institutions and private investors. The European Investment Bank is among the main contributors, pledging $377 million.
The monitoring platform is designed to increase transparency, enabling governments, partners and citizens to track electrification progress and financing in real time.
In an October 2025 report, the International Energy Agency (IEA) estimated that Africa will need to mobilise $150 billion by 2035 to reach universal electricity access. By showing where progress is advancing, where efforts are intensifying and where delays persist, the Mission 300 portal aims to become a key tool for adjusting strategies, accelerating implementation and measuring results more accurately.
