Juju in football is real – Asamoah Gyan
Asamoah Gyan, renowned as the all-time leading goal scorer in Ghana’s football history and the African player with the highest number of goals in the World Cup, has openly acknowledged the existence of juju, or traditional African spirituality, in football.
In an interview on Zed 101.9fm while promoting the All Regional Games, Gyan candidly admitted, “For me, I think there is juju in football.”
Despite his acknowledgment, Gyan was swift to emphasize that belief in juju is a personal matter and varies among individuals. His statement adds fuel to the ongoing debate surrounding the influence of spiritual practices on the sport, particularly in African football culture.
Gyan’s remarks come amidst his active involvement in promoting the All Regional Games, an initiative aimed at engaging sports enthusiasts across Ghana.
All Regional Games
The promotion of these games aligns with the momentum generated by the recently concluded African Games and serves as a platform for identifying and nurturing young talents from all regions of the country.
While the All Regional Games hold promise for fostering sporting excellence and national pride in Ghana, concerns have been raised about the sustainability of the competition, especially if the inaugural edition proves to be successful. Scheduled to commence in November 2024, the first edition of the All Regional Games will feature regional activities taking place between June 9 and 30.
The national festival is set to be held in November, showcasing athletes competing across nine diverse sports disciplines.
To generate excitement and support for the upcoming Games, a regional tour is planned to kick off on April 16.
This tour aims to raise awareness and garner enthusiasm from communities across Ghana.
With the backing of influential figures like Gyan, the All Regional Games have the potential to unite the nation in celebrating sporting excellence while also addressing broader societal issues such as the role of traditional beliefs in modern sports.
