Newmont Hosts Intercommunity Football Gala in Akyem

Newmont recently organized the annual Ghana history month football gala for its host communities in Akyem, located in the Eastern Region.

This event, held at the Amanfrom Park, brought together members from ten host communities to celebrate Ghana’s rich history through sports.

The football gala, which has become a tradition, serves as a platform for fostering collaboration and partnership among the communities.

Participants included traditional authorities, youth groups, community members, employees, contractors of the Akyem Mine, district sports agencies, and security agencies.

Charles Bissue, the General Manager of Newmont’s Akyem Mine, emphasized the significance of the football gala in strengthening the relationship between the Mine and the communities.

He highlighted Newmont’s commitment to transparent and respectful stakeholder engagement, emphasizing the importance of working together for shared value.

Bissue stressed the health benefits of regular sporting activities while emphasizing their role in fostering collaboration among host communities and between Newmont and the communities.

The participating teams represented various communities, including Adausena, Yaw Tano, Afosu, New Abirem, Old Abirem, Yayaaso, Hweakwae, Ntronang, Adjenua, and Mamanso. After a spirited competition, the Yaw Tano team emerged victorious, with Afosu and Yayaaso securing second and third place, respectively.

Individual awards were also presented, with Emmanuel Appiah from Yaw Tano named the best player and Desmond Aglago Snr from the same team awarded the best goalkeeper.

Yayaaso received recognition as the best fair play team, promoting healthy competition and mutual respect.

The football gala, which began in 2006, was temporarily suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic but resumed in 2022.

Newmont demonstrates its commitment to inclusion by hosting separate male and female editions of the event annually in March and September, respectively.

This initiative underscores the company’s dedication to strengthening its partnership and relationship with host communities.
