Gov’t to boost public transport fleet with GH¢400m

The government has announced plans to invest GH¢400 million in the acquisition of high-occupancy buses as part of efforts to improve urban mobility and strengthen public transport services across the country.

Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson disclosed the intervention during the presentation of the 2026 Mid-Year Budget Statement to Parliament, stating that the funds would be used to expand the fleet of state-owned transport companies, including Metro Mass Transit (MMT) and the State Transport Company (STC).

According to him, the move forms part of government’s commitment to providing safe, reliable, and affordable transportation options for Ghanaians.

“Government is committed to improving urban mobility and providing safe, reliable, and affordable public transport for Ghanaians. To this end, government is reallocating GH¢400 million for the acquisition of high-occupancy buses to strengthen the fleet of state-owned transport companies, including MetroMass Transit and the State Transport Company,” Dr. Forson told Parliament.

He explained that the intervention is expected to increase public transport capacity, particularly on high-demand urban and intercity routes.

The Finance Minister added that the additional buses would help reduce long passenger queues during peak hours and provide commuters with more efficient alternatives to private vehicles.

The announcement comes amid persistent challenges in Ghana’s urban transport sector, including inadequate public transport capacity, congestion, and growing demand for affordable mobility solutions in major cities.

The government expects the investment to support improved service delivery by state-owned transport operators while easing pressure on existing public transport systems.
