Ghana Launches National Research Fund, Calls for Research Lead Development

President John Dramani Mahama has called for a fundamental shift in Ghana’s development strategy, urging the country to place research, innovation and knowledge creation at the centre of its economic transformation agenda.

Speaking at the official launch of the Ghana National Research Fund, President Mahama said Ghana’s future prosperity would depend less on its natural resource wealth and more on its ability to generate, apply and scale innovative ideas to address national challenges.

According to the President, the establishment of the Ghana National Research Fund represents a significant milestone in efforts to strengthen the country’s research ecosystem and harness scientific inquiry as a catalyst for development.

“Today, Ghana affirms that research can no longer be treated as a peripheral activity. It must become one of the engines that drive our economic growth, our social progress, and our national competitiveness,” President Mahama stated.

He stressed that in an increasingly competitive global economy, countries can no longer rely solely on natural resources, geographical advantages or access to capital to achieve sustainable growth. Instead, he said, success is increasingly determined by a nation’s ability to invest in research, technology and human capital.

The President observed that the world’s leading economies have achieved remarkable progress through sustained investment in innovation and knowledge production.

“The most successful economies in the world today are not necessarily those that are endowed with the greatest natural wealth. They are the economies that have consistently invested in research, technology innovation, and human capital development,” he said.

President Mahama noted that Ghana must reposition itself to take advantage of the opportunities presented by the knowledge economy by creating an environment that supports research institutions, universities, scientists and innovators.

He emphasized that research should not be viewed as an academic exercise confined to lecture halls and laboratories but as a practical tool for solving national problems and driving economic growth.

The newly launched Ghana National Research Fund is expected to provide dedicated financial support for researchers, academic institutions and innovation-driven projects across the country. The initiative is aimed at promoting research that addresses critical development challenges in sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, energy, manufacturing and industry.

Observers believe the fund could help bridge the longstanding gap between academic research and national policy implementation by supporting projects with direct social and economic impact.

President Mahama expressed confidence that the fund would help unlock Ghana’s intellectual potential and foster a culture of innovation capable of accelerating national development.

He reiterated that the country’s long-term competitiveness would depend on its ability to invest in knowledge creation and transform research outcomes into productive economic activity.

The launch of the Ghana National Research Fund is widely seen as a strategic step toward building a more innovation-driven economy and positioning Ghana to compete effectively in the global knowledge-based era.
