Nat Awuni Opens Up on Reunion With Father

Ghanaian musician Nat Awuni has shared a deeply personal account of his troubled upbringing and eventual reconciliation with his father, revealing how family challenges shaped his life and career.

Speaking in a candid interview on Highlife Conversations on ZED FM, the musician recounted how his early years were marked by instability following his father’s decision to abandon pastoral work. According to him, that turning point led to a breakdown in family structure and support.

“And, yeah, my father was a pastor. And he left the pastoring job and went into other things, and that’s where everything changed,” he said.

He explained that his father’s absence had a profound impact on his education and upbringing. Despite excelling academically, Awuni said he was unable to continue his schooling due to lack of financial and emotional support.

“I passed my common entrance with distinction, but there was no help. By the time I got to Form Two, there was still no support,” he revealed.

The musician added that the separation between his parents left him and his siblings caught in the middle, ultimately leading to estrangement from their father at a very young age.

“When it got to a point, my father didn’t even want to see us. My mother’s children became victims of that situation. I left my father’s home around six or seven years old and didn’t return until I became popular,” he said.

Awuni noted that he eventually reconnected with his father years later under unexpected circumstances. According to him, his rising fame played a role in bringing them back together.

“It was when I became known that he started hearing my name on radio. Later, through my fiancée’s father, who had worked with him before, we got reconnected,” he explained.

He described how communication between them began through letters and telegrams, eventually leading to a meeting that helped rebuild their relationship.

“That was how I met my father again, around the time I was preparing to get married,” he added.

The musician also credited his longtime partner for playing a key role in restoring family ties and maintaining stability in his life.

“She has been with me all these years. This December will mark 48 years together. It has been by grace and understanding,” he said.

Awuni indicated that many of his life experiences, including his difficult childhood, have inspired his music, allowing him to tell his story through song while connecting with others who have faced similar struggles.
