Two Suspected Highway Robbers Killed

Two suspected highway robbers have been shot dead and a police officer injured during an intelligence-led operation by the Ashanti South Regional Police Command aimed at dismantling a violent robbery syndicate linked to multiple highway attacks across the country.
The operation, conducted between April 25 and 26, 2026, targeted a criminal network believed to be responsible for a series of armed robberies along major routes, including the Obuasi–Manso Nyinahin stretch and other highways.
According to the police, the operation began after intelligence indicated that a key suspect, Sumaila Munkaila, also known as “Guda,” was hiding at Vitin in the Northern Region. He was subsequently arrested and allegedly confessed to involvement in several robberies, including a July 2025 attack on a convoy and recent roadblock operations along the Buipe-Tamale and Vizesi-Fumbisi highways.
Following his arrest, the suspect reportedly led investigators to identify additional accomplices. This led to the arrest of another suspect, Umaro Musah, at Savelugu the same night.
Investigations further revealed that the suspects had hidden weapons in a bush at Yizesi near Fumbisi in the Upper East Region. Police proceeded to the location to retrieve the arms as part of ongoing investigations.
However, during the search on April 26, unidentified armed men opened fire from within the bush, triggering a fierce exchange of gunfire between the police and the assailants. In the process, the suspects attempted to escape but were shot and later died after being rushed to the Tamale Government Hospital. A police officer also sustained injuries during the confrontation.
The bodies of the deceased have since been deposited at the Bekwai Municipal Hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
Police retrieved a cache of weapons from the scene, including a CZ 805 assault rifle loaded with 14 rounds of ammunition, an AK-47 rifle with 56 rounds, a pump-action gun with six cartridges, and a single-barreled gun. Four jackets believed to have been used during the robberies were also recovered.
The Ashanti South Regional Police Command confirmed that investigations are ongoing and that efforts are underway to apprehend three other suspects identified as part of the criminal network. Authorities have reaffirmed their commitment to intensifying operations against armed robbery and ensuring the safety of commuters on Ghana’s highways.
