Gold Dependence Sparks Warning Despite Export Surge

Economic Analyst Emmanuel Boateng has urged policymakers to take advantage of Ghana’s strong export performance while addressing the growing risks tied to overreliance on gold.

His comments follow the latest monetary policy report released by the Bank of Ghana, which shows a sharp rise in export earnings driven largely by gold.

Speaking on Business Breakfast on ZED 101.9FM, Mr. Boateng described gold as the backbone of Ghana’s external sector, noting that overall exports grew by about 72.7 percent, while gold exports surged by 84.1 percent to reach approximately 4.26 billion dollars.

According to him, gold accounted for the bulk of the country’s export earnings, significantly shaping Ghana’s trade position.

He explained that the trade surplus represents the difference between exports and imports, clarifying that while gold dominates export figures, the surplus reflects a broader calculation after imports are deducted.

Despite the impressive gains, Mr. Boateng warned that Ghana’s heavy dependence on gold presents a structural risk to the economy.

He explained that the country is exposed to concentration risk, where a large share of export earnings is tied to a single commodity.

“When most of your export earnings come from one source, it becomes both an advantage and a vulnerability,” he said.

Mr. Boateng noted that Ghana is currently benefiting from strong global demand for gold, driven by heightened geopolitical tensions.

He pointed to the recent conflicts involving Iran, Israel and the United States, which have pushed investors toward gold as a safe haven asset.

This surge in demand has driven gold prices to record highs, boosting Ghana’s export revenues in the short term.

However, he cautioned that Ghana’s external performance remains closely linked to fluctuations in the global gold market, making the economy vulnerable to sudden changes in demand and prices.

Mr. Boateng therefore called for a deliberate effort to diversify the country’s export base, stressing that the current windfall should be used to build resilience and ensure long term stability.
