Hola Accra Festival Set to Fuse Spanish and Ghanaian Music in Jamestown

The Spanish Embassy in Ghana, in partnership with the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA), is preparing to host the maiden edition of the Hola Accra Music Festival, a cultural celebration aimed at fostering artistic collaboration and strengthening ties between Spain and Ghana. The festival, scheduled for April 24 at Ussher Fort in Jamestown, will feature Spanish band Mucho Mungo performing alongside three Ghanaian bands, creating a vibrant showcase of cross-cultural exchange.
Deputy Head of Mission at the Spanish Embassy, Isabel Ibarra, described the festival as a strategic tool for cultural diplomacy, emphasizing its role in promoting meaningful connections. “This is about bringing Spanish and Ghanaian cultures together through music,” she said, noting that the initiative is part of Spain’s Agency for International Cooperation’s broader plan to host music festivals across several African countries.
The festival draws inspiration from the successful Hola Bamako Festival in Mali, which has been running for eight years and is renowned for blending Spanish and local music traditions. Ibarra added, “We are trying to recreate that same experience here, connecting Spanish bands with local communities across Africa.”
Beyond live performances, the Hola Accra Festival is designed to foster long-term collaboration between musicians from both countries, offering opportunities for networking, learning, and exchange programmes.
MUSIGA President, Bessa Simons, highlighted the festival’s importance for Ghana’s music industry, describing it as one of the most impactful cultural collaborations in recent years. “When musicians from different backgrounds meet, they learn from each other and gain insight into what is happening elsewhere,” he said, adding that the engagement will help promote Ghanaian music internationally while bringing global sounds to local audiences.
Simons also revealed plans to incorporate workshops and symposiums into the festival, providing a platform for dialogue on the music industries in both Ghana and Spain.
With its combination of performances, cultural exchange, and professional development, the Hola Accra Music Festival is expected to become a landmark event, strengthening the cultural bridge between Ghana and Spain while offering audiences a unique musical experience.
This festival underscores the growing role of music as a medium for international collaboration and reflects a shared commitment to nurturing creative talent and cross-cultural understanding.
