Ghana, Russia Deepen Diplomatic Relations through Political Consultations
Ghana and the Russia have held a technical session of political consultations in Accra aimed at reviewing their longstanding bilateral relations and exploring new areas of cooperation.
The meeting, which took place on March 12, brought together officials from both countries to discuss collaboration across key sectors including agriculture, industrial development, infrastructure, energy, manufacturing and technology transfer.
In a statement issued on Saturday, March 14, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ghana said Ghana’s delegation was led by Eric Owusu-Boateng, Director of the Europe Bureau, while the Russian delegation was headed by Anatoly Bashkin, Director of the Department of African States.
Opening the session, Harold Adlai Agyeman, Coordinating Director of Political and Economic Affairs at the Ministry, highlighted the 68-year diplomatic relationship between Ghana and Russia, describing it as one built on trust, mutual respect and solidarity.
He noted that the partnership has been sustained through political dialogue, economic cooperation, educational exchanges and collaboration within multilateral platforms.
According to the Ministry, both delegations reviewed bilateral trade and explored opportunities to deepen cooperation in priority sectors.
The statement added that the two sides emphasised the need to expand university partnerships in science, engineering, technology and medicine, while also exploring collaboration in energy diversification, technical and vocational training and capacity building.
The delegations also exchanged views on regional and global developments, including the security situation in the Sahel and preparations towards the Third Russia–Africa Summit scheduled for October 2026.
The consultations further addressed sensitive bilateral issues. Ghana sought Russia’s cooperation regarding a Russian citizen implicated in the non-consensual publication of explicit images of Ghanaian women.
Concerns were also raised about the alleged enlistment of Ghanaian youth in Russia’s ongoing special military operations, with both countries agreeing to collaborate to address the matter.
Following the consultations, the head of the Russian delegation paid a courtesy call on Khadija Iddrisu, Chief Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where both sides expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the meeting.
The Ministry stated that the engagement reaffirmed the commitment of both countries to advance existing bilateral agreements and deepen cooperation through sustained diplomatic engagement while addressing emerging concerns affecting their citizens.
