National Chief Imam Condoles Iran over Assassination of Ayatollah Khamenei

The National Chief Imam of Ghana, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, has extended condolences to the Government and people of the Islamic Republic of Iran following the assassination of the country’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, March 3, the Muslim community in Ghana described the development as a moment of deep sorrow for the global Islamic fraternity. The Chief Imam portrayed Ayatollah Khamenei as a devout leader who combined service to his people with devotion to Allah, showing how religion and governance can work together to promote social order and national development.

“The Supreme Leader was also a symbol of resistance and hope for the oppressed. His Eminence further extols the martyred leader of Iran,” the statement said.

Sheikh Sharubutu condemned what he referred to as U.S.–Israeli aggression, saying it culminated in the martyrdom of the Iranian leader during the holy month of Ramadan. He expressed sadness over the loss of lives in the conflict, regardless of nationality or faith, whether Jewish, American, Arab, or Persian. He appealed to all parties to respect national sovereignty, human dignity, and the sanctity of Ramadan.

“His Eminence calls for an end to all hostilities. Indeed, escalating rhetoric must give way to peace building pragmatism,” the statement added.

The Chief Imam observed that although the conflict appears largely geopolitical, interfaith harmony has a crucial role to play in securing lasting solutions. He emphasized the need for a renewed global order anchored on the principle of “right over might,” which he believes would strengthen peace and security for humanity.

The statement concluded with prayers for Allah’s mercy upon the soul of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and all those who have died in pursuit of righteousness.

Religious leaders in Ghana say the Chief Imam’s message reflects the broader concern of the Muslim community about rising tensions in the Middle East. They note that his call for peace and respect for human dignity is consistent with his long standing role as a voice of moderation and interfaith dialogue.

Observers believe the statement also highlights Ghana’s religious leadership taking a moral stance on global issues, urging restraint and dialogue at a time of heightened conflict.

For many Muslims in Ghana, the assassination of Ayatollah Khamenei is not only a loss for Iran but also a painful moment for the wider Islamic world. The Chief Imam’s words of condolence and his appeal for peace are seen as a reminder of the need for unity and compassion across faiths and nations.
