Take strong stance against impunity for crimes against journalists – PRINPAG

The Private Newspapers and Online News Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG) has issued a passionate plea for the government, civil society, and the international community to take a strong stance against all forms of violence and aggression directed at journalists, with a specific focus on the situation in Ghana.

This call was made in a press statement released on the occasion of the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, an annual event observed on November 2.

PRINPAG stressed the importance of creating a secure and supportive environment for journalists to carry out their professional duties without fear.

They emphasized the necessity of implementing effective legal frameworks, conducting swift and impartial investigations into any crimes committed against journalists, and ensuring that those responsible are held accountable for their actions.

The statement recognized that while Ghana has made substantial progress in advocating for a free and independent press, challenges persist, particularly concerning acts of violence and impunity against journalists.

PRINPAG expressed its unwavering belief that journalists should be allowed to fulfill their constitutional mandate without fear of persecution or harm.

The statement underscored the indispensable role of the media in a democratic society and called for a collective responsibility to protect journalists who tirelessly work to provide the public with the right to information.

They urged everyone to actively champion press freedom and to hold those accountable who attempt to silence the voices of truth.

PRINPAG reaffirmed its commitment to advancing press freedom, protecting journalists, and promoting responsible journalism.

The Association stood united in demanding justice for every journalist whose rights have been violated.

In addition, PRINPAG called upon media organizations, both local and international, to enhance their support networks and implement measures to ensure the safety of journalists.

They stressed the critical role of collaboration between media houses, government institutions, and civil society in combatting impunity and securing the safety and well-being of journalists in Ghana.

This call to action from PRINPAG serves as a strong reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by journalists in Ghana and the imperative to safeguard their rights and safety in the pursuit of truthful reporting and a free press.
