Iran’s Supreme Leader Khamenei Reported Dead in U.S.–Israeli Strikes
Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has been reported dead following joint U.S.–Israeli airstrikes on Saturday. The country’s state media confirmed his death on Sunday, describing it as one of the most significant events in Iran’s modern history.
The Iranian government quickly declared a 40 day mourning period, urging citizens to honor the late leader. His death has raised fears of deepening instability across the Middle East, with analysts warning of possible escalation into wider conflict.
The strikes that killed Khamenei also claimed the lives of several senior officials, including Abdolrahim Mousavi, Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces; Defense Minister Aziz Nasirzadeh; Secretary of the Defense Council Ali Shamkhani; and Mohammad Pakpour, commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Their deaths leave a major gap in Iran’s military and political leadership.
In Tehran, thousands of people gathered at Enqelab Square on Sunday morning to mourn. The atmosphere was tense, marked by grief and anger. Some mourners wept openly, while others voiced defiance against the United States and Israel. “We came here to show that we are more united than ever. We will always be there for our revolution,” said one mourner. Another declared, “They have assassinated our leader, but they should know that we will get our revenge.” A woman in the crowd added, “Let them not think that by targeting our supreme leader, they can come into our country. We will not give even a single centimeter of our land.”
The joint U.S.–Israeli operation struck Tehran and several other cities, including Tabriz, Qom, Isfahan, Kermanshah, and Karaj. In response, Iran launched missile and drone strikes targeting Israel and U.S. bases across the Middle East. The exchange of attacks has heightened fears of a prolonged confrontation.
For many Iranians, the mourning period is not only a time of grief but also a rallying cry. Citizens see Khamenei’s death as a direct attack on their sovereignty and a challenge to the country’s revolutionary identity. The government has called for unity, insisting that the revolution will endure despite the heavy blow.
