Exploding Trading Volumes Signal Renewed Investor Confidence – Analyst

Economic Analyst Emmanuel Boateng has pointed to a sharp surge in stock market activity as clear evidence that investor confidence is returning to Ghana’s economy.

Speaking on Business Breakfast on Zed FM, Mr. Boateng said while macroeconomic improvements such as easing inflation and declining policy rates are important, the true measure of confidence lies in how investors are responding within the financial markets.

According to him, recent developments on the Ghana Stock Exchange show strong signs of renewed optimism, particularly in trading volumes, sustained index rallies and rising market capitalisation.

“Confidence is proxied by many things. For me, I am looking at what is happening in the market, not necessarily just inflation or policy rates but the actual movement of capital,” he stated.

Mr. Boateng revealed that the January 2026 market report recorded an extraordinary 938 per cent year-on-year increase in trading volumes, describing it as one of the clearest signals that investors are re-engaging with equities.

“In previous years, the stock market did not really perform. There were periods when returns were unimpressive. What we are seeing now is very different,” he explained.

He added that the sustained rally in the market index, coupled with a rise in market capitalisation to about GH¢220 billion, demonstrates growing capital inflows and stronger participation.

“When you see the amount of capital moving into the market and market capitalisation increasing to around GH¢220 billion, it tells you confidence is building,” he noted.

Mr. Boateng also observed a noticeable shift in investor behaviour, with many reallocating funds from fixed-income instruments such as Treasury bills into equities.

“Many investors are moving from T-bills into equity. Maybe the ‘T’ is beginning to look like an ‘F’, and they prefer an ‘E’ grade to an ‘F’ grade. That is what is happening,” he remarked.

He further indicated that improving macroeconomic conditions, including relative cedi stability and generally positive economic sentiment are supporting the rally.

Beyond institutional investors, Mr. Boateng said retail participation is also picking up, with individuals re-entering the market through brokerage firms.

He stressed the importance of improving digital access to encourage broader participation.

“One important thing for people to have is perhaps a brokerage app on their phone,” he suggested.

Mr. Boateng noted that the combination of rising trading volumes, sustained market gains, capital rotation from fixed income and improving sentiment points to a strengthening confidence cycle in Ghana’s financial markets.
