Peace Council Condemns Surge in Senior High School Violence

The National Peace Council (NPC) has strongly condemned the recent surge in violent incidents within some senior high schools in Ghana, highlighting the threat such behavior poses to student safety and the integrity of the nation’s education system.

In a press statement, the NPC expressed deep concern over what it described as a “worrying trend” of student-related violence, citing multiple alarming cases reported in just the past week.

Among the incidents cited, a student from Obrachire Senior High School in the Central Region was reportedly hospitalized after being attacked during a district athletics competition. Another disturbing case involved a female student from Osino Presbyterian Senior High School, who was allegedly gang-raped, drawing widespread concern from education and human rights stakeholders.

Additionally, the stabbing of a final-year student from Koforidua Senior High Technical School (SECTECH) occurred during the Supper Zonal sports festival in Koforidua, Eastern Region, further emphasizing the escalating severity of violent acts during school events. Reports also indicated that teachers from West Africa Senior High School were assaulted by students from Frafraha Community Senior High School in the Adentan Municipality, Greater Accra Region.

While the Ghana Education Service (GES) has condemned these incidents and promised disciplinary measures against perpetrators, the NPC has called for a more urgent and thorough investigation to ensure justice is served and to prevent further violence. The Council also acknowledged the efforts of the Ghana Police Service in apprehending some suspects but stressed that preventive measures must be strengthened, particularly during large student gatherings such as sporting competitions.

The National Peace Council urged educational authorities to improve security arrangements in schools and foster programs that promote peaceful coexistence among students. The Council’s statement underscores the need for collaborative efforts between schools, parents, law enforcement, and community leaders to safeguard students and restore confidence in Ghana’s education system.

With increasing reports of violent behavior in schools, stakeholders emphasize that swift intervention is essential to protect young people and uphold the standards of Ghanaian education.
