Ghana, Japan Sign $20 Million Grant to Upgrade Hospitals in Northern Region

Ghana and Japan have signed a $20 million grant agreement to upgrade selected hospitals in the Northern Region, in a move aimed at strengthening healthcare delivery and deepening bilateral cooperation in social infrastructure development.
The exchange of notes was formalised at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Accra between Japan’s Ambassador to Ghana, Hiroshi Yoshimoto, and Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.
The $20 million grant will finance the upgrading of medical facilities, procurement of modern medical equipment, and improvement of essential health infrastructure across selected hospitals in the Northern Region. The intervention is expected to enhance access to quality and affordable healthcare services, particularly for underserved communities.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Mr. Ablakwa described the agreement as a significant milestone in Ghana–Japan relations, noting that the Mahama administration places high priority on strengthening healthcare systems nationwide. He stressed that targeted regional investments are crucial to addressing disparities in service delivery and ensuring equitable access to medical care.
“Improving healthcare delivery remains central to our national development agenda. This partnership with Japan will directly impact lives in the Northern Region by expanding capacity and improving service quality,” the Minister stated.
Ambassador Yoshimoto reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to supporting Ghana’s development efforts, particularly in the health sector. He emphasised that the grant forms part of Japan’s broader cooperation strategy aimed at enhancing human security and promoting sustainable development.
The Northern Region has long faced challenges including limited specialist services, inadequate equipment, and infrastructure gaps. Authorities believe the new funding will help bridge some of these deficits, improve maternal and child health outcomes, and reduce referrals to facilities in southern Ghana.
Japan continues to play a strategic role in Ghana’s infrastructure and human capital development agenda. Over the years, the two countries have collaborated extensively in health, education, agriculture, and technical capacity building.
Both governments reaffirmed their commitment to sustained diplomatic engagement and development cooperation, underscoring that the latest grant reflects the strong and enduring partnership between Ghana and Japan, anchored on mutual respect and shared development goals.
