GSE Opens Week above 12,000 on Broad Market Rally

The Ghana Stock Exchange began the trading week on a bullish note, recording widespread price gains across multiple counters as positive investor sentiment extended into Monday’s session. The broad-based rally underscores sustained confidence in equities, particularly within the financial and consumer sectors.

The benchmark GSE Composite Index (GSE-CI) surged by 198.41 points to close at 12,004.09, breaking above the key 12,000 psychological threshold. The move reflects renewed buying activity and continued upward momentum that has characterised the market in recent months. Similarly, the GSE Financial Stocks Index (GSE-FSI) climbed 120.35 points to settle at 6,681.43, highlighting strong gains within the banking and insurance segments.

Financial stocks once again led the charge. Societe Generale Ghana advanced GH¢0.50 to close at GH¢7.34, while Ecobank Ghana gained GH¢0.50 to end at GH¢51.03. Enterprise Group added GH¢0.49 to close at GH¢5.44, and SIC Insurance rose GH¢0.24 to GH¢2.71. The upward movement in these counters signals renewed investor positioning within financial equities, which continue to benefit from improving macroeconomic stability and stronger earnings expectations.

Consumer and manufacturing stocks also recorded notable gains. Guinness Ghana Breweries posted one of the strongest increases of the day, climbing GH¢1.10 to GH¢12.10. Unilever Ghana appreciated by GH¢0.60 to close at GH¢25.98, while Fan Milk edged up GH¢0.13 to GH¢13.10. The performance of these counters reflects steady demand for defensive and consumer-driven stocks amid improving economic conditions.

In the energy and telecommunications space, Ghana Oil Company gained GH¢0.39 to close at GH¢4.35. Scancom PLC, operators of MTN Ghana, rose GH¢0.11 to GH¢5.58 and dominated trading volumes for the session.

Total market turnover reached GH¢14.63 million, with approximately 3.89 million shares changing hands. MTN Ghana alone accounted for more than 1.26 million shares traded, valued at over GH¢7 million, representing a substantial portion of overall market activity.

Among the few decliners was NewGold ETF, which slipped by GH¢0.96 to close at GH¢525.10, bucking the broader upward trend.

On a year-to-date basis, the exchange continues to post impressive returns. The GSE Composite Index has gained 36.87 percent, while the Financial Stocks Index has advanced 43.77 percent, underscoring sustained investor appetite for equities.

Monday’s performance signals continued positive momentum as the new trading week unfolds, with financial and consumer stocks firmly anchoring the market’s advance.
