GFA Prez Targets AFCON Glory for Black Stars
President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Okraku, has reaffirmed his ambition to see the Black Stars lift the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) trophy.
The Black Stars have endured a difficult run in recent years under Okraku’s administration. Ghana exited at the group stage in both the 2021 and 2023 editions of the continental tournament and failed to qualify for the 2025 competition held in Morocco following a disappointing qualifying campaign.
Despite these setbacks, Okraku insists his ultimate goal remains unchanged.
“I want to win the Africa Cup of Nations, and that is a fact. Only God knows the number of times we have tried and have not been able to win the AFCON title,” he said.
While the senior national team continues its search for continental success, Okraku pointed to recent achievements by other national sides. Ghana’s U-20 men’s team clinched the AFCON title, while the senior women’s team, the Black Queens, secured a bronze medal at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) and are set to compete again next month.
He also highlighted progress at the youth level. The Black Starlets have returned to the AFCON after several years, while the Black Princesses have reached the final round of qualifiers for the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.
“Basically, I want to win every tournament for Ghana and place the nation on the medal podium at every opportunity,” Okraku added.
Ghana’s last AFCON triumph came in 1982. Since then, the Black Stars have reached three finals in 1992, 2010 and 2015 but have fallen short on each occasion.
