Cement should not be used to preserve beans—FDA

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has warned the public against using cement to preserve beans after a video went viral on social media demonstrating the practice.
According to the FDA, the method shown in the video is not part of Ghanaian food preservation practices, and the Plant Protection and Regulation Services Directorate (PPRSD) under the Ministry of Food and Agriculture does not recommend or endorse it.
The video, which is not in a Ghanaian language, shows unsafe handling practices, including applying chemicals with bare hands and standing directly on the heap of beans without protective gear.
The FDA said these actions are contrary to approved food safety standards and could pose serious health risks.
In its statement, the FDA urged farm produce aggregators and retailers to refrain from unsafe preservation methods. Consumers are also encouraged to report suspicious food handling or preservation activities to the Authority for investigation and sanctions.
The Authority stressed that its primary goal is to safeguard public health and ensure that all food products on the Ghanaian market meet approved safety and quality standards.
