Clear Communication, Trust, Key to Long-Distance Relationship Success – Counselor

By: Solomon Nartey Tetteh

Counselor Rev. Margaret Ahoshie has outlined constant communication, trust, and clarity about the future as essential ingredients for the success of long-distance relationships.

Speaking on Business Breakfast on Zed 101.9FM, Rev. Ahoshie noted that distance in itself does not doom a relationship. However, without deliberate effort, emotional bonds can weaken over time.

“If it will succeed, there has to be constant communication because you are not seeing the person. The only way you can maintain an emotional bond is when you communicate regularly,” she said.

According to her, couples separated by geography must be intentional about staying connected, since physical presence is absent. Regular conversations, she explained, help sustain intimacy and reassurance.

Rev. Ahoshie stressed that strong trust is non-negotiable in long-distance relationships. Without it, suspicion and insecurity can quickly erode the foundation of the partnership.

She also warned against vague or undefined relationship goals. Many couples, she said, spend years in different countries without clear plans about their future together.

“It shouldn’t be vague. People can talk for so many years, one person in one country, the other elsewhere and it’s not clear-cut. At the end of the day, people get hurt,” she cautioned.

To avoid disappointment, she advised couples to establish clear future plans and a shared vision for eventually closing the distance.

Rev. Ahoshie encouraged couples to create communication schedules that work for both parties.

“You have to set schedules because of time differences. Do more virtual dating. Do things together,” she noted.

She explained that virtual activities such as watching a movie simultaneously, praying together, or engaging in shared online experiences can strengthen emotional closeness despite physical separation.

The Counselor also highlighted openness and transparency as critical factors.

“Let your partner believe in you. But if you are not open enough, then it is not going to work,” she said.

Rev. Ahoshie further noted that while long-distance relationships require extra effort, they can thrive when built on consistent communication, trust, clarity of purpose, and intentional connection.
