Kabiru Tiah Mahama condemns alleged military brutality in Walewale, calls for probe

The Member of Parliament for Walewale, Kabiru Tiah Mahama, has condemned what he describes as unprovoked brutality by military personnel against civilians and a journalist in Walewale, calling for a full investigation into the incident.
The MP said the incident occurred around 1 p.m. when armed soldiers, believed to have been deployed from Bolgatanga, entered parts of Walewale and allegedly assaulted residents, damaged vehicles, and brutalised a journalist who was documenting the incident.
According to him, at least three vehicles were vandalised, while scores of residents were assaulted. He said the journalist was whipped several times, detained for over four hours, and forced to delete photos and videos from his phone.
“These acts of barbarism are not consistent with our constitutional democracy. Even if someone is suspected of wrongdoing, the law is clear: arrest the person and allow due process,” Mr Mahama said.
He added that neither the local police commander, the Walewale military detachment, nor the regional minister was aware of the operation, raising questions about who authorised the soldiers’ actions.
The MP warned that continued military excesses could severely damage civilian–military relations in the North East Region, potentially leading to public resistance and the breakdown of intelligence cooperation.
He called on the Defence Ministry and military high command to investigate the incident and ensure accountability, warning that failure to act could result in legal action and formal petitions for a public inquiry.
