Energy Minister Holds Talks with WAPCo on Gas Supply

The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, recently engaged in high-level discussions with officials from the West African Gas Pipeline Company Limited (WAPCo) as part of efforts to evaluate performance in 2025 and chart strategic priorities for 2026 within Ghana’s evolving energy landscape.

The meeting focused on reviewing WAPCo’s operational performance over the past year, which Dr. Jinapor emphasized as crucial to sustaining natural gas supply and enhancing regional energy security across West Africa. He highlighted that natural gas continues to play a pivotal role in Ghana’s Gas-to-Power Policy, serving as a backbone for electricity generation for households, businesses, and industrial sectors.

Dr. Jinapor stressed the importance of closer collaboration with WAPCo to maximize gas supply efficiency, ensure consistent reliability, and support infrastructure expansion as the country’s energy demand grows. “Dependable gas flows are not only vital for stabilizing the power sector but also for managing costs and limiting reliance on more expensive alternative fuels,” the Minister noted.

He further pointed out that strengthening partnerships with regional energy operators is aligned with the government’s broader objective of achieving a secure, efficient, and sustainable energy transition. Such collaboration, he said, will help maintain affordable electricity while driving economic growth.

Representatives of WAPCo reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining high operational standards and working hand-in-hand with the Ministry to safeguard Ghana’s energy security and advance the green transition agenda.

The engagement is part of a wider initiative by the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition to reinforce regional cooperation, improve resilience across Ghana’s energy supply chain, and strategically position the sector for the year ahead. Both parties agreed that continued dialogue and joint planning will be essential in meeting the country’s growing energy needs and supporting long-term sustainability objectives.
