CAF Condemns Chaos at AFCON 2025 Final Between Morocco and Senegal
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has condemned the chaotic scenes that marred Sunday night’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final in Rabat, Morocco.
The match erupted into controversy after hosts Morocco were awarded a late penalty, prompting clashes between fans and security officers. Senegal briefly walked off the pitch in protest, only returning minutes later.
On the field, tensions escalated as Morocco captain Ashraf Hakimi threw Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy’s towel to the ground. Teammate Ishmael Saibari also attempted to snatch the towel from substitute goalkeeper Yehvann Diouf, who was standing behind Mendy’s goalposts to prevent further incidents.
In a statement released on Monday, January 19, 2026, CAF said it condemns the unacceptable behaviour of some players and officials during the Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 Final between Morocco and Senegal in Rabat.
The statement noted that CAF strongly condemns any inappropriate behaviour during matches, especially acts targeting referees or match organisers. All footage is being reviewed, and the matter will be referred to the competent bodies for appropriate action against those found guilty.”
Meanwhile, Senegal coach Pape Thiaw issued an apology for his team’s decision to briefly withdraw from the match, which was later reversed.
Senegal ultimately secured their second AFCON title, thanks to an extra-time goal from Pape Gueye, ending a dramatic and controversial final on a triumphant note for the West African side.
