President of the ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development, Dr. George Agyekum Donkor, has called for stronger institutions, inclusive growth and strategic leadership to address persistent development challenges facing Ghana and the wider ECOWAS sub-region.
Speaking at the New Year School and Conference at University of Ghana, Dr. Donkor noted that countries across the sub-region continue to grapple with recurring economic vulnerabilities, weak governance structures, social inequalities, large infrastructure deficits and the absence of clear strategies to address climate change.
Dr. Donkor challenged policymakers and citizens to reflect on what he described as “The Ghana We Want.” He said such a Ghana must be a place every citizen is proud to call home, built on strong institutions where systems function effectively and the rule of law is respected.
According to him, the ideal Ghana should be anchored on transparency and accountability, free from favoritism, and characterized by safety and security both in homes and on the streets.
He added that education and skills training must be industry-driven and socially relevant to prepare citizens for the demands of a modern economy.
Dr. Donkor further emphasized the need for equal opportunities for all, underpinned by meritocracy and fair access to education and employment. He said citizens must be able to secure decent jobs to support themselves and their families, while enjoying access to quality healthcare services.
He also highlighted the importance of reliable infrastructure, including good roads, consistent electricity supply and access to potable water.
Dr. Donkor urged stakeholders to work towards building a knowledgeable and vibrant society capable of solving everyday challenges.
He called for well-resourced institutions to enforce laws, as well as an enabling environment that supports local entrepreneurship and innovation, to improve the survival and growth of new businesses in Ghana.
