President Mahama Receives Prestigious Yoruba Chieftaincy Title in Nigeria
President John Dramani Mahama has been conferred with the distinguished Yoruba chieftaincy title, Aare Atayeto Oodua of the Source, by the Ooni of Ife, His Imperial Majesty Oba Adeyeye Enitan Babatunde Ogunwusi, Ojaja II. The ceremony took place at the Ooni’s palace in Ile-Ife, Osun State, Nigeria, drawing chiefs, dignitaries, and members of the Yoruba community.
The title, which translates as “A President who reorganises the global space for humanity,” which honours President Mahama’s longstanding commitment to global cooperation, equity, and sustainable development. The installation followed days of cultural preparations, including traditional rites and elaborate ceremonies at the palace. Festivities featured vibrant decorations, performances, and displays reflecting Yoruba heritage, creating a historic and memorable occasion.
President Mahama, renowned for his advocacy for multilateralism, has consistently emphasised the importance of collective action in addressing pressing global issues such as climate change, economic inequality, and the need for stronger representation of developing nations in international decision-making. His leadership and diplomacy on the world stage have earned him recognition across Africa and beyond.
This latest accolade adds to President Mahama’s growing list of traditional honours within the Yoruba community. He was previously bestowed with the title Aare Atolase of Offa by the Offa Kingdom in Kwara State in October 2015, in recognition of his contributions to leadership and regional diplomacy.
The conferment is also expected to deepen cultural and diplomatic ties between Ghana and Nigeria, highlighting the enduring historical connections shared by the two nations. The Ooni of Ife, widely regarded as a key custodian of Yoruba culture, continues to play a significant role in promoting heritage, interfaith harmony, and socio-economic development across Nigeria and the broader African diaspora.
With this recognition, President Mahama’s influence now extends not only through political and diplomatic channels but also within traditional and cultural spheres, reinforcing his standing as a leading advocate for Africa on the global stage.
