Ghana Stock Market Ends Thursday Flat as Trading Slows

By Praisebell Rosemond Larbi

The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) closed Thursday’s session on a quiet note, with major indices ending flat as trading activity slowed after a more active start to the week.

The benchmark GSE Composite Index (GSE-CI) remained unchanged at 8,634.75 points, while the GSE Financial Stocks Index (GSE-FSI) also held steady at 4,500.14 points. Despite the lack of movement on the day, the market continues to post strong year-to-date performance, underlining sustained investor confidence in Ghanaian equities. As at the close of trading, the GSE-CI had gained 76.63 percent in 2025, while the GSE-FSI was up 89.02 percent.

Trading activity on Thursday was notably subdued. A total of 408,041 shares were traded, with a market value of approximately GH¢1.36 million. This was a sharp contrast to Tuesday’s highly active session, when more than 10.86 million shares worth about GH¢29.4 million changed hands. Market capitalisation remained broadly stable at GH¢167.8 billion, reflecting limited price movements across listed equities.

Market watchers attribute the slower pace to profit-taking and a wait-and-see approach by investors following earlier midweek excitement. With many stocks already posting significant gains this year, some investors appeared content to pause and reassess positions ahead of the year’s close.

Among individual counters, NewGold (GLD) emerged as one of the few gainers. The gold-backed exchange-traded fund edged up by GH¢0.86 to close at GH¢449.86. Although only 115 units were traded during the session, NewGold continues to draw interest from investors seeking exposure to gold as a hedge and store of value. Over the year, the fund has traded within a range of GH¢338.83 to GH¢508.31, reinforcing its reputation as a relatively stable investment option amid market fluctuations.

Overall, Thursday’s performance capped the week on a calm and steady note, with no major shifts in market direction. While trading volumes were modest, the flat close suggests a degree of consolidation rather than weakness, as investors monitor economic signals and corporate developments.

As the year draws to a close, market participants are expected to remain selective, focusing on fundamentally strong stocks and defensive assets, while positioning for opportunities that may emerge in the final weeks of trading.
