Ghana Stock Market Inches Up as Banking Stocks Lift Trading Activity

The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) posted a marginal gain on Tuesday, supported by renewed investor interest in key banking stocks, particularly Cal Bank and Ecobank. The uptick adds to what has so far been a robust year for the local market.
At the close of trading on 2 December, the GSE Composite Index which tracks the overall performance of the market, edged up by 1.17 points to settle at 8,611.87. The GSE Financial Stocks Index also recorded an improvement, rising by 1.64 points to reach 4,459.35.
Market activity strengthened considerably compared to the previous session. Total traded volume increased from about 1.27 million shares on Monday to 3.77 million shares on Tuesday, with the corresponding market value climbing to GH¢2.88 million. The overall market capitalisation also inched up, closing the day at GH¢166.5 billion.
Cal Bank dominated trading, accounting for the bulk of market activity. Its share price rose from GH¢0.41 to GH¢0.42 after more than 3.4 million shares changed hands. Ecobank Ghana also recorded a slight gain, with its stock price moving from GH¢23.00 to GH¢23.01 following renewed buying interest.
Although Tuesday’s improvement was modest, the broader market picture remains positive. Since the beginning of the year, the GSE Composite Index has advanced by over 76 per cent, while financial stocks have surged by more than 87 per cent, signalling sustained investor confidence throughout 2024.
The continued resilience of the market underscores growing optimism among investors, particularly in the banking sector, which has remained a key driver of activity on the exchange.
