Mona Captan credits late husband for five decades of golfing success

Mona Captan, one of Ghana’s most celebrated golfers, has revealed that her late husband’s steadfast support played a central role in her remarkable achievements in the golfing fraternity.

 Speaking to the media on Saturday during the Mona@50 Golden Jubilee Swing tournament in Tema held in her honor, she reflected on how her late husband’s encouragement pushed her to keep learning, practicing and improving, shaping her into the enduring figure in Ghanaian golf she is today.

Mona Captan described her husband as her backbone in golf, noting that without his guidance and constant encouragement, reaching such heights would have been impossible.

“It hasn’t been easy but it was good that I had my late husband. He did support me in anything that I did in th game, he pushed me,” she said.

She emphasized that her long-standing dedication to the game was fueled by passion and discipline, which allowed her to remain competitive over decades.

Reflecting on her career, Mona said the occasion felt like her jubilee day, marking a milestone that brought her immense joy and fulfillment.

She revealed that she started playing golf simply because she tried it and fell in love with the game, dedicating herself to it completely. Golf captured her heart in a way no other sport did, even though she had been active in volleyball, netball and football during her school days. For her, golfing has always been a gift from God.

Beyond personal dedication, she credited the contributions of key individuals who played significant roles in her journey and the organization of her 50th-anniversary celebration. Among them were Lady Captain Helen Appiah, Competition Secretary for the Centre of the World Golf Club, Mr. Richmond Aboagye, and Sylvia Acquah, whose efforts ensured the success of the Golden Jubilee Swing tournament.

She  also thanked her family, sponsors, and everyone who came to celebrate the milestone. “Thank you to all the people, my God bless you,” she said, expressing appreciation for the support and encouragement she has received throughout her career.

The celebration brought together golfers from across Ghana, reflecting Mona’s enduring influence on the sport and her role as a mentor and inspiration for both men and women in golf.

Captan also urged young girls to approach sports with confidence, determination, and focus, encouraging them to pursue their dreams without hesitation.
